This set of 4 Log Rack Brackets are designed to be attached to two lengths of wood to give you a strong sturdy log rack. The brackets fit standard planed wood size 38 x 89mm: this size is available from most hardware stores but are not included with the brackets.
Its is important that the wood you burn on your fire has a moisture content of 20% or less. With a log rack you can store your logs easily and neatly where the air can get to both sides of the log helping dry your logs out before burning.
Each bracket measures: 150 h x 95 w x 100mm d - 6" x 3.75" x 4"
How you store your fire wood can have a direct affect on this. It is best practice to store your wood where the air can get to both sides, allowing the wood to dry. The traditional method of stacking the logs against the wall of a house will only do so much of a job and will take much longer for your logs to dry to the required less than 20% moisture content. 1kg of properly seasoned wood will give approximatley 4Kw of heat energy.
Ideally you should:
Purchase firewood that has been seansoned for two years, this means the woods has been felled and then seasoned either in a forest (-40% moisture content) or in storage (-30% moisture content)
Through out Autumn cut and store your logs in a outdoor log rack. Place the log rack in a sheltered position and where air can get to both sides of the rack, this will help to season the wood further and decrease the moisture content.
During the winter months bring a few days supply of firewood into your home where they can dry further before burning. We would sugest keeping these logs near to your stover or fireplace in a log basket or log holder, as you use this wood make sure you replenish it from outside so you have a constant supply of dry wood suitable for burning.
How can you tell when the firewood is ready?
Look our for Radial splits within the wood itself, this suggest that the wood has dried sufficiently and the moisture content will be close to the desired 20% or less for a clean and efficient burn. Also the bark peeling away, this suggests that the wood is shrinking as it dries and the harder bark layer splitting as this happens.
To be totally sure of the moisture content of your firewood you can use a moisture meter.
