Fire Kits & Fire Baskets
To burn an open solid fuel fire you will either need to have a kit or a fire Basket .
A modern domestic fire kit consists of a fire grate , ash pan and a fire front or fire fret. in one box a Fire Kit will have everything you need to do the job, a grate, ash pan and fret. they fit into a traditional Tapered fire chamber . In post war homes , pre cast fire chambers Fire Kits are sized to the British standard classification, based on the imperial width of the fire opening at the front, in 2” increments typically from 14” to 18”. Whilst the phisycal dimension of the kit may be less than the “classification” the fire kits can easily be matched to the appropriate fire opening be it a 16”, 18”.
Larger houses or Hotel fireplaces or fireplaces in Stately Homes may have an inglenook fire chamber a large box design three foot or more across. Inglenook fireplaces traditionally contain fire baskets or swans nest grate. The Swans nest basket designs are more ornate grates which sit freely on Dog legs or Andirons and may be used with or without a Fire back.
You can buy fire baskets and kits for modern themes, in contemporary homes, or traditional themes for victorian fires.
