A Fireplace grate is the essential component in any open fire, it is the metal grate upon which the fuel is burnt. The fire grate sits above the ash pan, supporting solid fuel. The grate has lateral bars which allows air to feed the fire and the ash to fall below. They are sized to the British standard classification, based on the imperial width of the fire opening at the front, in 2” increments typically from 14” to 18”. Please note: the actual dimension of the grate may be less than the fire opening classification. For example the 16” stool grate only measures 14 ½”, this is because it needs to fit within the 16” fire opening and allow for some expansion when hot. This is generally the rule of thumb for all fire grates, We have supplied the exact measurements of the grates on the product page. Please double check these sizes will fit your fireplace before ordering.
