The following are safety tips to help you enjoy your fire, they are not intended as a comprehensive guide and are not a replacement for common sense!
Don't place flammable items or furniture to close to your fire
Ensure your chimney is clear and it is recommended to have your chimney swept on a reguular basis to avoid the risk of chimney fires.
How often this needs doing will be dependent upon how often you use your fire.
Ensure you use a spark proof fire guard or screen when you leave the room , and you should always use a fire guard when children are in the room of either a spark proof or nursery style. When burning logs ensure you use hardwood dry logs to avoid excess spitting and taring.
Do not pile your fire to high as the fire could be unstable and fall forward, or cause dangerously high flames.
It is often a good idea to place a fire fender around your hearth to ensure no embers fall onto the carpet or wood floor.
It is a good idea to ensure your hearth is kept clean a tidy so no flameable bits are littering the hearth, this can be done by using either the brush from your companion set or your hearth tidy.
When using toasting forks or chestnut roasters ensure you only use them over the embers of the fire and not on a fully blazing fire, also ensure you do not leave them in the fire to long causing the handles to become hot.
Some customers have dificuly getting their fires started and are tempted to use newspapers as a draw plate to force the air under the firegrate, this is very dangerous as the paper will catch light.Instead you should use a fire draw plate or blazer.
