Fire Guards, Fire Screens and Spark Guards
As well as being decorative, a Fire guard has two purposes, to prevent people, often children or pets, from getting too near and falling and / or scalding themselves in the fire, at home, in the caravan or on the narrow boat or yacht. Or in the case of solid fuel fires to protect the room contents and occupants from hot debris that may be ejected from the fire.
To minimise the health and safety risk, particularly where children or pets are concerned, it’s probably best to have two layers of fire guard protection i.e. two fire guards .
The first guard acting as an inner layer of protection against fire risks from hot materials being expelled from the fire, ideally a light off the shelf spark guard with a flat profile at the back that abuts to and seals in the fire opening. Typically up to 22” wide these guards have a relatively fine mesh to prevent any sparks or small burning material from getting through but still allows the heat of the fire to come through, and the fire to remain visible from the room.
As secondary protection an outer Nursery Fire Guard or baby fireguard acts as a secondary layer preventing children or animals from getting near the fire and keeping them a safe distance, approximately 18” away from the fire and the fire screen. Off the shelf nursery fire guards are generally wider steel mesh cage-like structures that fit around the hearth and are fixed to the sides of the fireplace. They are extendable and so are guaranteed to fit most fire places and are available in in pewter, bronze and black powder finishes.
We also manufacture (in less than four weeks) heavier built Bespoke nursery style fire guards or stove guards that can be fitted with doors to allow you to carry out maintenance on the hearth, or to tend to the fire in as safe a way as possible. They can also be built with hooks and eyes to provide a semi permanent fixture if required. Fine or coarse mesh nursery fire guards or vertical bar nursery fire guards are available to match the theme of your fire . Bespoke Nursery fire guards can also act as stove guards for use with wood burning stoves where a wrap around style is needed, they can be built to any specification due to our bespoke fire guard service.
A single layer of protection (a single fire guard) is sufficient where the need is to protect the room contents and occupants from hot debris being ejected from the fire. Again the highest level of protection will be achieved by a spark fire guard , or heavier duty box fire guard be it square fire guard , arched fire guard or wedge fire guard, these fire guards have a flat rear profile that abut to and seals in the fire opening around the sides and along the top.
Heavier duty Fire Guards with High levels of protection flat rear profile: Arched box fire guards, square box fire guards or wedge box fire guards
