A Fireplace grate is an essential piece of equipment. It holds the logs and coals etc, keeps the flames in the designated area, and can define the size of fire. Fire grates have gaps that are wide enough to let ash through but small enough to allow solid fuel to sit on top. Fire grates will determine in part how your fire will look aesthetically, what type of fuel you can burn and the size of fire you enjoy and whether you will be able to leave the fire on at night or not.
There are cast Iron fire grates and some are steel, both are very heavy metals and can stand up to high temperatures. Ideally a fire grate that holds the burning wood and embers against the back wall of the will maximize the amount of heat that enters a room, and minimize the amount of smoke. Some fire grates allow the fire to burn all night safely. This is the “all night burner fire” which controls the burning rate of the fire causing the fire to smoulder safely for long periods of time. Ill fitting fire grates are quite common, If the fire grate is too small or If the space below the fire grate is too much, it will burn too quickly, and the fire will not draw possibly resulting in smoke escaping into the room. In post war homes the size of the fireplace grate is determined by the size classification of the fireplace opening or clay fire back, that is manufactured to a British standard size classification of 14” 16” & 18” etc. In turn this is why you will notice you can get 14" fire grates, 16" fire grates, 18" fire grates but their actual measurements will not exactly relate to the classifications just mentioned. An 18” fire grate may not be exactly 18” wide it is designed to fit with a tolerance into a 18” classified fire back.
Fire openings in pre war homes tend to be ad hoc sizes, often stylized as “Victorian fire grates” with older style grates. It is unfortunately necessary to measure the fire grates depth and front and back widths to source a replacement.
