Coal buckets also known as Coal skuttles or Coal Hods depending on where you live, are essential items in the use of solid fuel fires. The ideal tool to collect coal from the coal bunker, large enough to provide a ready supply of coal in a room, and small enough to enable people to carry it through the house.
Stored next to an open fire, their main use is small scale coal storage and to pour coal into the fire grate when building a fire or when the fire is already lit. Modern coal buckets / coal Hods are available in a very wide variety of finishes e.g. brass coal buckets, galvanised metal coal buckets, antique brass coal buckets, pewter coal buckets, black with brass trim coal buckets, and many more.
Coal buckets or Coal Skuttles are bucket shaped, they can also have a lip design on one or both sides. They may have two handles on the back one small fixed handle and one large semicircular moveable handle at the top to help support and carry the coal to the fireplace, or just one moveable semi-circular handle at the top to provide protection for the hands from the heat of a fireplace. The taller more tubular design with an angled opening at the top, and with fixed handles on back, is generally referred to as a Coal Hod. Coal hods have a pronounced lip and an angle opening at the top to make easy work of scooping coal directly from a coal bunker.
