It is important to have an ash pan that’s the right size for the grate The new replacement ash pan needs to fit the shape of the fireplace and to be an effective fire tray it has to be the right height to fit snugly underneath the grate. Ash pans come in a variety of designs to correspond with the different fireplaces and grates. Ash pans generally have handles to allow ease of removal e.g. to deposit the debris in the ash bin. Some ash pans have lids, this is useful where the ash from the fire is particularly fine e.g. after burning wood.
The Ash pan will also have to be robust, strong enough to last a long time and it should be capable of easy removal for cleaning. Buying a replacement ash pan can be a bit of a minefield. You will need to have the exact dimensions and shape of the fireplace, the inner hearth, and the fire grate itself. Making a template of the old Ash pan is often a good idea. Older Ash pans can be obsolete, if this is the case the best way to avoid the problems of an ill-fitting replacement ash pan is to get a bespoke ash pan custom made to your exact requirements.
At the firesideshop we supply a range of ash pans under different classifications. We supply ash pans for 12" fire grates, ash pans for 14" fire grates, ash pans for 16" fire grates and ash pans for 18" fire grates.
Where clearing away ash from ash pans is concerned, it’s worth bearing in mind that there are ash tidies – these are metal containers for your ash pan – simply slide the ash pan into them, and you can safely and cleanly carry ashes to e.g. your hot ash bin for disposal.
